Baseball collectors fall into a few main camps: prospect chasers, MLB rookie collectors, set builders, and vintage hunters. For prospect chasers, Bowman, Bowman Chrome, and Bowman Draft are the only games in town — this is where 1st Bowman cards live. For MLB rookies and set building, Topps Series 1 & 2 and Topps Chrome are the flagship products. Allen & Ginter, Stadium Club, and Topps Heritage offer art-driven and retro alternatives. Vintage Topps from the 50s–80s is a deep market of its own.

Pick the Set That Fits Your Chase

Topps holds the exclusive MLB license, so all official MLB baseball cards come from Topps. Topps Series 1 & 2 is the annual flagship base set. Topps Chrome is the refractor version with the strongest secondary market for rookies. Bowman is the prospect product — 1st Bowman cards (a player’s first official card before they reach MLB) are the most chased prospect category in the hobby, with Bowman Chrome and Bowman Draft adding refractor and draft pick variations. Buy Authentic, and Buy Smart

Baseball has one of the longest histories in the hobby, which means lots of legitimate vintage product but also a lot of counterfeits and trimmed cards in the high-end market. Buy sealed product from trusted dealers sourced through authorized distribution, and inspect raw vintage singles carefully for trimming, recoloring, and altered surfaces. For valuable cards, PSA, BGS, and SGC grading adds authentication and liquidity. We run monthly bulk PSA submissions out of our Laval shop.

What are the best MLB baseball cards to collect right now?

For modern collectors, Topps Chrome rookies and 1st Bowman Chrome prospects are the most chased categories. Topps Series 1 & 2 base rookies are a more affordable entry. For player PCs, Shohei Ohtani, Ronald Acuña Jr., Mike Trout, and Aaron Judge dominate the modern market. Vintage collectors focus on Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and the iconic Topps and Bowman sets of the 50s–70s.

What is a 1st Bowman card and why is it important?

A 1st Bowman card is a player’s first officially licensed baseball card, issued by Bowman before the player reaches the major leagues. Because Bowman has the exclusive prospect license, 1st Bowman cards are the prospect collector’s holy grail and can become extremely valuable if the player breaks out as an MLB star. 1st Bowman Chrome refractors and autographs are the most chased subcategory.

What’s the difference between Topps Series 1 / 2 and Topps Chrome?

Topps Series 1, Topps Series 2, and Topps Update form the annual flagship base set that covers the full MLB season. Topps Chrome takes a curated subset of those cards and reissues them with a refractor/chrome finish. Chrome cards typically command higher secondary market value, especially for star rookies, because of the refractor parallels and tougher print runs.

Why does Topps have a monopoly on MLB baseball cards?

Topps holds the exclusive MLB and MLBPA license for traditional baseball trading cards through their current licensing agreements, which is why you don’t see Panini Prizm or Select Baseball with team logos. Panini still produces baseball products, but without official MLB team logos. Note that the licensing landscape can shift — always check current product availability.

Are the baseball cards sold at CardChasers authentic?

Yes. We source sealed Topps and Bowman product through authorized distribution and inspect all singles before listing. Graded cards come in their original PSA, BGS, or SGC slabs with verifiable cert numbers.

Can I grade my baseball cards through CardChasers?

Yes. We run monthly bulk PSA submissions out of our Laval shop and can pre-screen your cards in person to help you pick the best candidates. We handle paperwork, packaging, and tracking.
