How to Choose the Right Cards for Your Collection

01

Match the Product to Your Collecting Goal

If you're chasing Young Guns and on-card autos, hobby boxes from Upper Deck Series 1 & 2, SP Authentic, Artifacts, and The Cup are your best lane — they have the highest hit odds and exclusive content not found at retail. Blasters, fat packs, and tins are the friendliest entry points for new collectors and gift-givers. If you already know exactly which Habs rookie or vintage card you want, skip the variance and shop singles or graded slabs.

02

Pick the Set That Fits Your Chase

Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 is the backbone of modern hockey collecting and the home of Young Guns rookies. O-Pee-Chee delivers massive checklists and affordable parallels for set builders. SP Authentic and Artifacts lean into on-card autos and Future Watch rookies. Black Diamond and The Cup are top-shelf for premium patches and 1/1 chases. For Habs PCs, focus on flagship Young Guns of Caufield, Suzuki, Slafkovský, and Hutson, plus vintage OPC and Parkhurst for legends like Richard, Lafleur, and Roy.

03

Buy Authentic, and Buy Smart

Counterfeits and re-sealed wax are real risks in the hockey market. Shopping with an Upper Deck Certified Diamond Dealer like CardChasers means your sealed product comes through authorized distribution. For raw singles, check centering, edges, surface, and corners under good light. For higher-value cards, grading through PSA, BGS, or SGC adds authentication and liquidity — and we run monthly bulk PSA submissions out of our Laval shop if you want us to handle the paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best NHL hockey cards to collect right now?

For modern collectors, Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 Young Guns remain the most chased rookies in hockey, followed by premium inserts and autos from SP Authentic, Artifacts, and The Cup. For Montreal fans, Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovský, and Lane Hutson rookies and parallels are top targets. Vintage collectors focus on Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur, Patrick Roy, and Pavel Bure rookies in high grade.

What are Young Guns and why are they valuable?

Young Guns are rookie cards inserted into Upper Deck Series 1 and Series 2 hockey each year — roughly 1 per hobby pack. They're the most iconic modern hockey rookies and consistently hold value because every major NHL rookie gets a Young Guns card, making them the default rookie-of-record for modern collectors.

What's the difference between Upper Deck and O-Pee-Chee hockey?

Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 is the premium flagship — better stock, Young Guns rookies, and higher-end inserts. O-Pee-Chee (OPC) is the deep set-builder's product, with massive checklists, retro design, and tons of affordable parallels. Both are made by Upper Deck and feature current NHL players, but they target different collectors.

Are the hockey cards sold at CardChasers authentic?

Yes. CardChasers is an Upper Deck Certified Diamond Dealer, so all sealed product is sourced directly from authorized distributors. Singles are inspected by our team before listing, and graded cards come in their original PSA, BGS, or SGC slabs with verifiable cert numbers.

Do you carry vintage hockey cards and Habs legends?

Yes. We rotate vintage OPC, Parkhurst, and Topps singles featuring Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur, Jean Béliveau, Patrick Roy, and other Habs legends, plus 90s rookies of Pavel Bure, Eric Lindros, and Wayne Gretzky. Inventory rotates fast — visit the shop or message us with what you're hunting and we'll let you know when it lands.

Can I grade my hockey cards through CardChasers?

Yes. We run monthly bulk PSA submissions out of our Laval shop and can pre-screen cards in person to help you pick the best candidates. We handle paperwork, packaging, and tracking — you bring the cards and wait for the reveal.
